Why GoldenSword?

There are a million RPG systems out there. Why would I want to choose GoldenSword?

  • it's free
  • it's a lot simpler to play than most systems
  • flexible character creation
  • you don't have to read tons of manuals to figure out the rules
  • way less math than most systems
  • it's easily extensible
  • it has an intuitive magic system
  • easily integrates with your existing tabletop “stuff” like mats, minifigs, etc

The Goldensword system always uses high rolls for success, doesn't make you do much adding, and uses a simple and consistent mechanic for all scenarios including combat, attribute checks, skill checks, and magic use. Most rolls (except damage rolls) are based on d20 dice and a pertinent attribute or skill score. I said AND, not PLUS. You will not have to do a lot of adding.

One of the main features is simplicity. What we DON'T do is just as important as what we do do. (hehe, he said doo-doo). We don't bother with overcomplicating things like:

  • strength bonus
  • encumbrances
  • armor agility penalties
  • initiative order
  • racial traits
  • class
  • wasting time looking up stuff
  • different rules for everything
  • weight accounting
  • clothing size
  • save rolls
  • tons of adding up dice
  • low rolls (eww!)
  • arguing over a million obscure rules

to the potential GM: for detailed (but still simple) workings of the Core Mechanic please look here.
