For non-combat situations, often an element of chance is involved. For example, will the party notice the secret door?

Alice, Bob, and Charlie are sneaking around an old dungeon. Charlie has the highest Perception attribute of the three, so his is assigned to “keep your eyes peeled” duty.

Charlie's Perception attribute is 12. The GM has assigned a difficulty level of 24 to a hidden door.

Using the handy lookup table:

Looks like Charlie has to roll a 17 or more on his (d20) Perception Roll, in order to find the hidden door.
