Already Known Spells

As a discretionary exception to the general rule of learning spells, the GM may deem that for a particular campaign, each starting character may already know a few spells. The idea is that the spells were learned during the character's back story.

Alternate Spell Power Mechanisms

Pooled MP

Some spells take a lot of MP - more than any one character is likely to have.

Multiple characters may team up to cast the spell as a group, with each character contributing a portion of the MP. The points may be divided up in any way the group agrees on.

Automatic Detect Magic

There are some interesting side effects of high powered mages and alternate_spell_power_mechanisms.

Any characters with Magery >= 10, automatically know the detect_magic spell.

Whenever their CURRENT MP is above 30 points, they are automatically detected by anyone else who also knows Detect Magic. In other words, high powered mages can sense each other's presence without even trying. If the daily allotment of MP points is partially spent, and the CURRENT MP drops below…

Grimoire

Your grimoire is your personal spell book. You need it in order to cast spells. The assumption is that you have the grimoire on your person and are carrying it in a handy location so that you can refer to it while casting.

We do not explicitly role-play the reading of the grimoire during casting. Instead think of it as a set of notes to jog your memory. You can cast any spell you know. It is implied that you may have to glance at your notes occasionally. This is one reason that more…

Loci are areas with special magical properties. These properties may be an attenuation or focus of mana (magic energy) which makes magic harder or easier to use at this location. The attenuation may affect all magic, or it may affect only a certain type of spell. This more specific effect is known as an anointing.

Magic is the heart of the Goldensword system. The rest of the system is designed to work around the core magic system. However, you don't HAVE to use magic if you don't want. But we encourage you to try it. It's easy and fun!

Spell Learning Example

Found a spell book? Got some XP? Good let's learn some spells.

XP to learn = 1 XP per Spell Difficulty level. (Eg. a spell of difficulty 20 takes 20 XP to learn.)

Most spells have prerequisites. You can not learn a spell unless you already have learned it's prerequisites.

Vida Wood

Vida wood is a special type of wood imbued with magical abilities. The wood comes from the rare “Vida Tree” (actually more like a low shrub), which grows only in high mana loci.

The tree is very slow growing, and grows only in high mana loci. Typically however, high mana loci tend to be on high rocky mountaintops with very poor growing conditions. They tend to be barren rocky spots prone to high wind and cold temperatures. These factors combine to contribute to the extreme rarity of…
