Spelljammer

A spelljammer is an interdimensional craft that allows transportation between worlds and planes.

Spelljammers work by tapping into the magic flux field between worlds. When “slipped in” they exist in a non-space that resembles a spaghetti noodle. Though it would SEEM improbable, it is fairly common for multiple spelljammers to meet in the space. While “in the slip”, space has the appearance of a psychedelic rainbow colored tunnel. When the destination has been reached the space turns pale grey. A spelljammer may “slip out” in transit, effectively reaching a random location.

A spelljammer consists of a wooden deck perched upon an ovoid hull of wood and tar, containing a buoyant material. This material must be swapped magically when “slipping out” in order to match the world medium. This allows the craft to act as a ship on water or a balloon in air.

Extending up and out from the deck are triangulated triplets of masts which facilitate the flux interface. The particular thrusts and destinations are dependent upon the interplay of various gemstones placed at the ends of the masts, which can easily be swapped out by rope and pulley systems. While a triplet can be crewed reasonably by four people, attempting to sail a sixer or niner becomes difficult without three crew per triplet plus ancillary staff.

It is common practice to fine tune destination by the use of gemstones native to that destination. Virgin stones are especially reliable for this use. The act of use weakens the homeworld's signature, causing unpredictable destinations.

The power bowl contains additional gemstones that become charged while in-slip. These are then used to power the additional magic spells required for successful navigation, including slipping in and out, and altering buoyancy. These power gems do not generally run out of charge, however, this will happen if the time in-slip is small relative to the number of trips. In essence; “in town driving”. Inexperienced captains may not think to check for this. Should this does happen, mast gems can be temporarily subbed into the power bowl, to slip in, then all gems will be charged by a medium to long trip.
