the Abbot of Carney
The Abbot is an appointed lifetime position of high honor. The current Abbot has been in place for 37 years, through the rule of 4 Jarls.
The influence of the Abbot is typically more or less equal to the other Alders in general, however, the current Abbot has grown greatly in influence, due to his unusual breadth of knowledge and interests. His wisdom is unmatched in history, economics, and analytics.
Over the past decade or so, the Abbot has encouraged research into many lost areas of knowledge, beginning to create a culture of curiosity and investigation rather than the narrow superstitious mindset all too characteristic of many previous councilors, and reinstating Azuth. Such Arts as herbology, tattoo, battledance, and even magic are now becoming more generally accepted.
The Abbot can heal characters to full HP and will do so in exchange for an “offering” whose value is dependent upon renown.
Renown at the Abbey
see DMG22

During each of the 8 months (see below), and once in winter, each Hoped or higher must volunteer a 72 hr period at the abbey, or lose their status. This requirement can be overlooked for 100 GP
When a character reaches Shining status, the abbot will begin giving hints of mysterious quests, and will become interested in sending the party on lesser side quests in order to test their mettle, resolve and trustworthiness
Upon reaching Faithful status he will dole out the quests for the Holy relics. A magic item belonging to each of the eight gods.
Acolytes
The abbot employs any number of acolytes, and a bursor named Shylock who is a shady loan shark and fence.
Deals with Shylock count toward Abbey renown.
Gods and Months of Connaught County
The Abbey endorses 8 gods (plus the winter goddess, Auril)

---|---|---|---|---|
Ilmater | Lawful Good | Endurance | Hands bound at wrist with red cord | 1 (March/April) |

The calendar is defined by lunar months, beginning at the 3rd full moon after winter solstice. Each full moon is surrounded by five festival days marking the beginning of the next demiseason. The end of Denier begins the long winter period of solitude and fasting. Some see this as a continuation of Denier, though it is officially Auril which last for approximately four months.
The two moons of latter Auril after the solstice are minor holiday of mourning and hope.
County citizens are not discouraged from venerating other deities apart from the official pantheon, and many do, particularly racial gods and gods of trade. Thus it is not uncommon to hear other oaths beside “by the 8”.

Secrets
The Abbot has knowledge of the ancient city of glass, and possesses some old books on the subject, mainly historical records and some cultural perspectives. He is one of a few people who have actually used the old access tunnels between the abbey and the castle.
He is willing and able to fund exploratory ventures into the old city for cultural purposes, but this requires renown.
