War of the 500 Kings

For a thousand years, kings ruled and made war upon the lands. Kings rose quickly and were overthrown even quicker. Heirs were murdered, bastards abounded, gathering their own followers and overthrowing their fathers. It was a time of great chaos, treachery, and since wars are not cheap, unsustainable taxation and repression of the common folk.

Eventually the people revolted in a tidal wave of violence, tearing down all structure and vestment of the monarchy, destroying the castles of the kings by sheer numbers, despite enormous loss of life. The kings, royal families, usurpers, and upstarts were executed wholesale, with only a handful escaping to self imposed hermitages and obscurity.
