Errant by Florian Armas
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Errant is a story of kingdoms and exiles, bloody blades and broken promises. If you love medieval fantasy, you will like this book. If you don’t like fantasy this book is not going to change your mind. It has all the usual long journeys, sword fights, kings, betrayals, usurpers, princes, castles and horses. The large cast of characters was reminiscent of A Song Of Ice And Fire, but honestly, the story started losing me after a while. Why? There is no magic. No dragons. Just a lot of regular people doing regular things. Which, for this particular reader, does not a fantasy make.
The writing style alternates between some very finely worded, almost Dickensian prose, and some sections that feel a bit “clunky”. All in all, the reading is rewarding, but somewhat difficult. I’d suggest it for a vacation read, rather than for trying to wind down after work after turning off your brain.
